When I was at frog design, I was tasked with design a lot, and I mean A LOT, of social media sites. When it comes to designing for a social network, you need to ask a couple of hard questions. Does it give more than they expect to receive? Do those involved truly believe in the validity of their endeavor? I can't speak on this project specifics. But I can tell you that most of the challenge was getting the client to understand what it was they wanted, and how to go about designing for it.
